The Commons for Eco-Peace.

27 april 2023 @ 13:00 - 15:30

Academia-civil society collaboration toward the 2024 UN Summit of the Future.

The proposed Commons for Eco-Peace conference is a first step toward a three-year project Earth Trusteeship Dialogue. Since 2017 joint efforts are made to explore and articulate Earth Trusteeship as a contribution to global governance. In that process, the UN Summit of the Future1, September 2024, its satellite meetings and follow-up, are increasingly seen as a hoped- for existential landmark. Global challenges include climate emergency, bio-diversity loss, economic inequality, violence, increased armament and war, as well as displacement of citizens impacting cultural dissociation. Solutions to global problems urgently require global governance.

Henry was last winter invited al co-autor of the book:  Reflections on Earth Trusteeship. Mother Earth and a new 21st-century governance paradigm.

On the 27th of April at 13.00 Henry will be there online for the press conference.

The Earth Trusteeship Working Group (ETWG), who prepared the 416 pages volume – published by INI Books, Thailand – is in various ways engaged with “open coalition networking” towards the UN Summit of the Future, to be held in September 2024. An important issue is the creation of a Special UN Envoy for Future Generations. Also, we actively supported and continue supporting the ICJAO (Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice) campaign on climate justice, resulting in the UN General Assembly request by consensus to the ICJ in The Hague. We anticipate a substantial contribution from the perspective of Earth Trusteeship to the related discourse. The ICJAO campaign was an initiative of the Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC), pioneering Pacific Island state Vanuatu, and the World’s Youth for Climate Justice.

We are very keen to reconnect with ongoing Dutch, and European, networks and new partners. After our last meeting in October 2019 (Toekomstdag sociaal ondrnemen) the COVID crisis interrupted the flow of our collaboration.

Authors of Reflections on Earth Trusteeship include:
